The tasks in this text are modelled on the rubrics and task types in the GCSE examinations to begin in 1998. Most, therefore, have German rubrics and require a response in German. A few of the more complex comprehension and interpretation tasks, and scenario settings for writing tasks and role play contexts, are in English, as in the examination. A list of standard German rubrics is included to allow for preparation of the exam. There is one unit for each of the five "Areas of Experience" in the National Curriculum orders for German. Within each unit, all four skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - are covered through tasks which draw on sources and stimuli typical of the GCSE papers.
