This book is the first study to focus upon parties to the left of social democracy-communist, 'new left' and 'green left' parties. It highlights the broad range of responses to European integration formulated by these parties, looking closely at factors influencing the evolution of the parties' policies on Europe. Dunphy examines the left parties' views on building an 'alternative Europe' going beyond free market capitalism, investigating whether these parties have yet formulated a unique response to European integration.
