Sinopsis

These books aim to offer a programmed source of learning for adults wishing to return to serious study and proceed into the higher education system. Based upon Manchester University's access course, "New Horizons", they aim to help mature students to acquire and refresh their study skills, discover their potential as students and develop confidence and belief in their own abilities. The books are organized as programmed text through which the reader can work, checking his or her performance against the study guides. They can be used as course material, for distance learning and for independent study. Though volume two follows volume one, each book can be used effectively on its own. "Thinking and Writing" concentrates upon the production of high quality written work. The book discusses the essential skills for good writing: understanding the assignment, planning essays, thinking clearly, sentences and paragraphs, grammar and punctuation, the appreciation of written style and how to tackle examinations. It also points out and discusses the opportunities for further study open to the adult student. "Making the Grade" is designed for adults returning for further study, especially those with family or work commitments, or those in retirement, or planning a career change. Teachers in colleges of further education , extra-mural departments, schools, polytechnics and LEA institutions, will find it a useful teaching aid.
