This book presents a basic treatment of mechanics for students of mechanical engineering and other engineering disciplines.
Plane motion is considered in detail. The contents will enable the reader to analyse the very large number of engineering problems which fall into this category. It will also provide an excellent background for students wishing to progress to more advanced studies in three-dimensional mechanics.
Topics covered include kinematics, Newton's laws, statics, dynamics, work and energy, momentum, variable mass and fluid flow systems. In the first part of each chapter the governing equations are developed from basic principles in a rigorous manner and the assumptions made are discussed. The second part of each chapter is devoted to applying the basic principles to engineering examples, such as machines or structure.
Typical applications considered are power presses, I.C. engine and switchgear mechanisms, gear boxes and robots.
