With laparoscopic techniques firmly established as a valuable and fast-developing part of general surgery, many conventional open technique operations are being called into question. The majority of operations are now within the scope of minimal access surgery, posing a problem for the general surgeon in evaluating which is the better approach for a particular condition, especially with the limited data on laparoscopic techniques due to their recent history.
