A first edition - first printing of Volume III of "The Letters of Virginia Woolf", published by The Hogarth Press in 1976. Illustrated throughout with monochrome photographic plates. ***Very good in sea-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased, with slight reading creases at the top of the spine. No other bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges foxed, mainly to the top edge (please see scans). Internally near fine with no previous ownership inscriptions or annotations. Pages clean with no foxing. No creases or tears. The paper used for this production is thin but of a nice quality. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of £12.50 net. The dustwrapper is complete, with no chips or tears. Some light creasing to the extremities, and very small nicks and closed tears. Some gentle fading to the spine colour, with a small spot at the lower spine. Foxing to the inner flaps, with some browning to the edges. ***242mm x 160mm. 600 pages including an extremely detailed 25pp Index at the back of the book. ***'The third volume of Virginia Woolf's letters covers the period when she wrote five of her best-known books -- "Mrs Dalloway", "To the Lighthouse", The Common Reader", "Orlando" and "A Room of One's Own" -- and became one of the most famous writers of her generation. It also traces the slow evolution of her love-affair with Vita Sackville-West.' The individually published "Letters of Virginia Woolf" are quite hard to find now in collectable condition.
