With any advanced material there is always the tendency for more effort to be devoted to further development programmes than to exploring appropriate ways of exploiting existing developments within industry. A key reason for this is the lack of suitable test techniques with which to evaluate their performance. The key theme of the conference for test techniques for metal matrix composites was testing, but applications, performance and commercial aspects were also looked at. The papers in these proceedings cover - the commercial development of aluminium metal matrix composites, characterization of the uniformity of particulate reinforced MMC, uniaxial testing of particulate MMC, developments in the processing of titanium alloy composites, critical assessments for quality assessment, mechanical testing and lifing of MMCs, characterization of crack growth from an unabridged defect in continuous fibre reinforced titanium metal composites, interfacial mechanical testing of metal matrix composites, thermomechanical testing of intermetalic matrix composites, and finally the UK National Forum on MMC Test Technology - a mechanism for technology transfer. The conference was organized on behalf of the Institute of Physics by the UK National Forum on Test Techniques for Metal Matrix Composites.
