This non-technical book, now in its eighth edition, focuses on music appreciation from a listener's perspective. The text is divided into three major sections: the first is devoted to the materials and elements of music, looking at such things as sound, pitch and homophonic texture. Section two focuses on the forms and types of music, including: sonata form and variation form of Wagner, music drama, Gershwin, "The Phantom of the Opera" and religious music. The third and final section highlights the major periods and styles of music from Greek and Roman times to the present day.
