The story is captivating with Christian faith, and exhibits how people get stuck in paths of others making, but still one has the ability to choose their own destination. This book is good for Young Adults(Juvenille), and Adults. Any age will enjoy and benefit from its encouragement. This depiction includes some romance. Although this story is fictional, many can acknowledge their own pain and confusion, and experience an ending of joyful fulfillment. Although there are instances of pain and sadness in the book, the overall tone is positive. The book incorporates a variety of elements: adventure, Christianity, romance, and fiction. The content is clear-cut and clean, making it an easy and entertaining read for teenagers and young adults. While there are a slew of characters who all play important roles in River to Somewhere, the primary characters of this text are a family of three (the mother and two children), and the boat dock owner. The story revolves around the trials and tribulations of this family---the abuse they go through and the decisions of the mother that eventually determine their fate. The mother is undoubtedly a prominent character in the book, and she demonstrates an unparalleled level of resolve and faith in God. Despite constantly being abused by an alcoholic husband, she stays strong and guides her children in the ways of goodness and truth. Although she does not have wealth to give to her children, she bestows upon them her power of faith, and happily appeases the inquisitive nature of her children---and their questions pertaining to God. River to Somewhere represents the journey of life and the places to which it can lead. The story emphasizes a strong belief in letting God guide our sails, and continuing in faith, despite the ordeals that one may encounter in life. Ultimately, Rupp successfully awakens the emotions of the readers and ignites a strong sense of sympathy for the mother and her family. The book is essentially about the abuse and victimization of the mother---and her strength to overcome. The take-home message from this text is to not allow your unfortunate circumstances to prevent you from experiencing the pleasures and adventures of life. In a nutshell, if life throws you lemons, make awesome lemonade.
