Shapell (changed from Schapelski) was 23 at the end of WWII, and found himself homeless, and with his sister the only living relative (they survived Auschwitz), managed to get to Germany. Here they became part of the thousands of displaced persons who were hated by the Germans and mostly ignored by the American military presence. They spent many years helping these displaced thousands rebuild their lives, built a school, an orphanage for Jewish children and helped the American authorities deal with this tremendous tragedy.
