He is the recipient of the Science Journalism Award of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Magazine Award. His previous books include The Fermi Solution: Essays on Science; Taming the Atom: The Emergence of the Visible Microworld; and Rainbows, Snowflakes, and Quarks: Physics and the World Around Us.
