An integrated, practical introduction to 16-bit and 32-bit microprocessors using the Motorola 68000 family as examples for electronics engineering, computer science, and technology students. Basic theory that applies to all 16/32-bit microprocessors is presented early, to give students a strong foundation before beginning coverage of the specifics of the 68000 family, associated peripheral devices, software engineering, program development, and interfacing. Parallel, serial, interrupt, and DMA types of I/O applications are explored as a means to further define hardware and software details. Working models of each I/O interface reinforce concepts and help illustrate similarities and differences. Hardware is discussed at the system level. Software analysis is presented in a modular format. Discussion of interfaces is based on real, functional, industrial applications.
