This book traces the evolution of ideas and images of the goddess in the West from prehistoric times, through Crete, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and the Middle East to her manifestation in Judaism (Eve etc), Christianity (Mary) and agnosticism (Sophia). The perspective is historical with Jungian overtones. Images are interpreted, not merely presented, and it is argued that the goddess needs to play a more valued role today.

Very nice unclipped jacket offered now in a new mylar cover. -- In this definitive and powerfully argued study, scholarly yet accessible, Jules Cashford and Anne Baring draw upon art and mythology, poetry and literature, archaeology and psychology, to show how the myth of the Goddess has been lost from our formal Judaeo~Christian images of the divine.
