The pioneering effort of Cole and Eales was joined subsequently by Wilson and Fred, who published a Study in 1935 of the growth and development of research on the subject of nitrogen fixation by plants.2 It is clear that Wilson and Fred had an intuitive grasp of the value of the literature as something more than a means of communicating research results among sclcntlsts. Study of the literature as an entity they claim, should provide valuable information for the interpretation of past production and might afford some basis for prediction of future trends within a given field.3 Like their predecessors, Wilson and Fred showed empirical evidence of the cyclical nature of research within a field.
