The pioneering effort of Cole and Eales was joined subsequently by Wilson and Fred, who published a Study in 1935 of the growth and development of research on the subject of nitrogen fixation by plants.2 It is clear that Wilson and Fred had an intuitive grasp of the value of the literature as something more than a means of communicating research results among sclcntlsts.
