Prominent among the causes to which the present plight of the Company is due, are unremunerative freight and passenger rates, both local and interstate, from which the Company has thus far been unable to obtain material relief heavy increases in taxation and wages, and many burdensome requirements imposed by public authorities; and large investments in the securities of other railroad companies which, although they may have been justified at the time they were made, have since become unproductive. The amount invested in such securities aggregates about and entails heavy interest charges with no counterbalancing income from dividends or interest.
