That is my reason for writing this book: a desire to state the case for a more rational treatment of railway problems in the hope that it will lead to a more humane treatment of railwaymen. I have no intention of even attempting to produce a handbook dealing with all the complex issues and confusing statistics of railway finance - there are already numerous excellent treatises on the various material phases of the subject - my first, and last, concern is with the hundreds of thousands of human beings whose lives are bound up in the ruder and more solemn facts of the railway industry.
