Excerpt from Prælectiones Pharmaco-Mathicæ and Medico-Practicæ, or Lectures on the Rationale of Medicines, Vol. 2: Containing All That Is Necessary for Knowing the Virtues of Drugs Already Discovered, or That May Hereafter Be Found Out; In Which Are Inserted All Simple and Compound Medicines Now in Use, and Their Operations Clearly Stated

Indeed it cannot be faid that every Earth is alike in its Nature, becaufe each Species differs in its mechanical Properties, the fpecifick Gravity, the Colour, the Duftility, the Hardners and F i gure differ in each; hence mul't we be oblig'd to affirm, that each Earth differs in its Texture from another, nor have we the Capacity to fearch ih to the Reafon oi' this Difference, we can only re fer it to the Almighty Power and Will; the Pot ter forms his Veffels into What Shapes, and makes them of what Clay he pleafes: And according to the Properties which each Earth enjoys, they have various ualities, and aft varioufly in human Bodies, fome being fpherical, Others quadrangu lar, others of different Figures Their Pores al fo differ, fome being narrower, Others wider. To be brief, as Things fiand, the Bufinefs of Phyfici ans or Artificers is to find out the Properties of each Body by repeated Experiments. This la'f'c Age and the prel'ent have fliew'd an Example of an unwearied Diligence to future Ages; and if this Scene of rifeful Curiofity goes forward for two or three Ages more, Things may at laf't arrive at a Certainty.
