II. Sutures: Various substances are used as sutures to approximate, support, and hold in position the edges of wounds. These artificial supports must be retained in position until the process of repair is so advanced that they no longer are needed. If the wound is superficial the ends of the suture remain visible and may be removed after repair is completed. Sometimes a superficial wound is closed by a suture which is buried in the edges of the skin, and such sutures usually are not removed. If the wound is a deep one deep sutures may be buried in the tissue and cannot be removed after healing is completed.
