The ultimate purpose of sampling may be said to be the establish ment of the commercial or chemical value of a bulk of any material. As such a bulk is, in nearly every case, large and unwieldly, sampling is designed to furnish a small and readily handled part, in which the quantitative relations of the various constituents are the same as in the bulk, so that the percentage of any of its constituents may be ascertained and the value so obtained will apply to the bulk.' The foregoing statements may be put into algebraic expression as fol lows.
