In the ten years since the first edition of this book was published, the sub-speciality of nail disease has grown substantially in terms both of the understanding of the diseases which are present and their treatment. Then, this book was hailed as an authoritative volume in which nearly every article published about nail disease is mentioned, and an attempt is made to record every disease in which nail defects have been noted (British Medical Journal).

The new edition has undergone fundamental change, particularly in respect of molecular biology, and the place of nail surgery. The chapter on investigations has been integrated and that on fungi reflects the tremendous growth in the availability of microbiological agents in recent years.
