timely book presents an up-to-date treatment of the subject matter contained in mechanical and civil engineering courses variously described as "Mechanics of Solids", "Mechanics of Deformable Solids", "Mechanics of Solids and Structures", "Mechanics of Materials", "Strength of Materials" and "Stress Analysis". A special feature of the book is that numerical and computer techniques form an integral part of the text, using FORTRAN 77, the language still most widely used by engineers and one of the most portable between different computers. These techniques are also included in the problems and answers featured in the book. The book is intended to be used as a text for first year undergraduates, with a considerable overlap into second year courses.
