"Understanding English Grammar" presents the essentials of English structure to students who have had little or no opportunity to study the language. It does so within a framework derived from modern linguistic theory. Students, however, require no previous knowledge of linguistics. Through use of this book, students should gain an understanding of what is involved in the scholarly study of language and, while doing so, acquire a considerable knowledge of English grammar. This book provides both a descriptive coverage of English grammar and an introduction to major theoretical issues in the study of languages, the latter mainly from the perspective of the work of Noam Chomsky. It is, however, pedagogically rather than theoretically oriented. Its aim is to open the door to further study of the language to students who are interested in acquiring a good knowledge of how English might be described so that they can use that knowledge in such areas as language teaching, the study of literature, various reseach activities, and possibly even further linguistic study. Consequently, considerable attention has been devoted to matters of presentation in the text, there are numerous exercises at the end of each chapter with suitable example answers provided, and a final indexed glossary is included as a further study aid.
