The discipline of economic history effectively started in the 17th century. However even now the identity of the subject is ambiguous, pulled as it is between the humanistic approach of history and scientific applications of economics. This book examines the methodological problems that have arisen from the clash of these two cultures, and aims to provide an account of the nature and substance of economic history.
