Who is God, really? While our lives are going well, we may not face the issue head on. Even Bo, an Alaska salmon fisherman working in a dangerous profession where death is never far off, tends to live in the moment, busy coping with rough weather and trying to make sense of his impossibly tangled love life. Then, alone on an offshore bank, an error of inattention puts him at risk of losing everything and forces the question. Philosophy's just a part of the story in this first novel by a veteran Alaska salmon troller; action prevails. In the wind-driven spray and the blood on the deck, from a wild ride through a near-gale to the calm of quiet anchorages, we get a clear picture of the on-board life. On the docks, over the boat radios, and in the cafes and bars, the warm nature of a close-knit Gulf of Alaska fishing community comes through as Bo and his friends pursue an erratic but amiable quest for enlightenment.
