Sinopsis

A short, poetic ballet story with traditional themes of darkness and light, romantic imagery, villains and an instance of that perennially favorite: lost innocence. The story is told in three acts, a finale, including a prelude. A lively prologue serves to induce a fairytale-like atmosphere where we meet the Strider and her admirer, a young man mesmerized in the calm of nature, falling under her spell: “… an’ in his ear, a charm she speaks!” A water strider (more than just a bug on a pond!), is an inspiration for a young man, in whom he sees himself and a naiveté he fears is lost forever. Spinning pirouettes and sparkling entrechats, the Strider is cautious, yet filled with childhood curiosity. Soon though, she faces worldly afflictions, uncertainty and an encounter with an unsavory salesman. The young man, captivated by the performance, finds himself “transported” onto a magical stage. There, he confronts nightmarish flashes of horror, questions his beliefs, and has his own dealings with the aforementioned salesman. At times, the author’s lines flow with lyrical urgency and then shift somewhat erratically, alluding to a wild range of conflicting feelings and emotions. As we watch the performance, we are drawn into this fantasy/murky reality as the protagonist struggles through conflicting feelings of unbelief and anger, love and contentment—and that often enigmatic—guilt. Like all ballets, A Strider’s Ballet is musically and visually expressive. While the story is poetic in nature, the lines are straightforward yet always thoughtful and challenging enough to provoke further contemplation. Essentially, the author seeks to entertain and invites the audience to sit back and enjoy the performance. Now, that’s some mighty fine dancing…
