Ai Bei is from Beijing, China. After her graduation from a medical school, she was teaching and practicing medicine at a hospital associated with the school. For a time she was torn between two careers – her medical practice as a gynecologist and her increasingly insistent calling as a writer. She became a full-time writer in 1983 and has published more than two dozen short stories and six novels in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, United States and other countries.
