Sinopsis

Bernard Scruggs and his family have worked as sharecroppers in Louisiana longer than they wish to remember. The 1910s bring with them a challenge of change, a dare which Bernard is afraid to take. But there is a new hope rising; he sees it in the eyes of his children, he recognizes it in their dreams. Bernard knows all about these dreams and so does his wife Alice. Can such dreams come true? How many times have they heard the words, "Live in hope, die in despair." His son Bubba says the south, "be a death place" and Bernard knows it's true. But, how can he take his family to the cold, cold north. It would be like stepping off of a cliff with no one to catch you.
