This Research Note contains contributions by a number of leading authorities on the calculus of variations, optimization and related topics. The papers were given at an international symposium held at the University of Bologna, Italy, in May 1985. The calculus of variations, with its many recent ramifications, is now a large field, touching on real analysis and functional analysis, on the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations and on such diverse applied areas as elasticity, plasticity, control, system theory and econometrics.
