This introduction to the most popular instruments used in Western music today includes both traditional and more recent electronic instruments used in rock music and jazz. It also presents voices and instrumental groups. The instruments are presented according to the group to which they belong: aerophones, membraphones, idiophones and mechanical or electrical. Drawings and explanations detail how these groups of instruments and the different voices produce their sounds. Each instrument is illustrated by a photograph or drawing, with a brief description of how it is made and played, and examples of music written for it. Also included are some well-known performers, both past and present, plus ideas for music to listen to. An accompanying cassette includes music to illustrate the different instruments and their special effects, as well as pieces of music for students to listen to and answer questions about in the exercise called "Listening Tasks". Practical exercises called "Sound Experiment" help students to learn more about different instruments by experimenting with different ideas and sounds. As well as the sound experiments and the listening tasks there is a quiz included in each section. This text will provide students with background information necessary for the listening and composing elements for the new GCSE examination. This is a Cambridge University Press publication from July, 1995.
