Measurement is an important branch of engineering science, covering such diverse issues as the measurement of the acceleration of an aircraft, the daily production levels of an oil platform, and the acidity or alkalinity of waste discharge into a river. First published in 1983, the second edition of this work takes account of developments in instrument technology, drawing on examples from a wide range of current technology. The author introduces general measurement systems followed by the principles of typical sensing, signal conditioning, signal processing and data presentation elements. Lastly, it examines some of the more specialized measurement systems and new and emerging techniques such as optical measurement and ultrasonic systems.
