This book includes extracts and a precise of all the standards relevant to engineering design and production of threaded fasteners. For historical accuracy, it reproduces technical content from standards exactly as they were originally printed. Explanatory commentary has been added where the text of the book differs from the original standard. It has been updated to include all revised standards, and any new standards in the area. Extracts from those standards that have been withdrawn or made obsolescent are included, with notes, for user reference. This edition includes a fuller introduction and explanation of the book's uses. The handbook concentrates on the properties and uses of the screws, rather than how to make them.
Mike Heritage has worked in mechanical engineering for 46 years and been involved with the approval of mechanical components for use on aerospace equipment for the past 22 years, including the preparation of specifications for non-standard threaded fasteners. Mike is Chair of the BSI ACE/12 committee for 'Aerospace fasteners and fastening systems' dealing with standards for mechanical products and fasteners for use on aerospace equipment and is a committee member of the BSI FME/9 committee 'Fasteners - Mechanical properties' which deals with all of the standards covered by this edition of Handbook 44. Roger Reed trained as a metallurgist and was technical manager of a major UK fastener manufacturer for more than 30 years. In 2006 he became technical consultant to several UK and USA fastener manufacturers and consultant on fasteners to various UK committees and organisations in structural steelwork. He has been a member of BSI fastener committees for more than 30 years and is chair of FME 9 and other fastener subcommittees, as well as a member of ISO TC2 SC1 for more than 25 years and convenor of CEN TC185 WG6 since it was formed in the early 1990s. For 20 years he was chair of various technical committees of the UK fastener industry trade organisation. Tom Russell has worked in mechanical engineering for 50 years and has been involved in the design, manufacture, quality and application of male threaded fasteners for the last 35 years dealing mainly with automotive companies and their sub suppliers. For the last 30 years he has been involved with BSI Committees as both a committee member and chairman of FME/2 and FME9/3, which also meant involvement with the relevant international committees as a UK Expert.
