A story of a southern family during World War II, set in Fayetteville and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Their lives, loves, trials, losses, and victories. As war is about to come to the USA in 1941, four women find their lives and dreams impacted in unexpected ways. Against the backdrop of 1940's daily life, the story is rich with the culture of the times, including news, fashion, movies, radio, songs, and speech. The story advances through the voices of the mother, a young adult daughter, a teenage daughter, and a pre-adolescent youngest. Each woman shares a very different perspective of the times. Mama Ethel, a widow, struggles to hold them all together: headstrong Doris, fragile but determined Kathleen, and rebellious and entertaining Evo. By 1945, the family has weathered life-altering events, some shocking and heartbreaking and others humorous and joyful. A highly readable and engrossing tale. The book is loosely based on the collection of wartime memorabilia left to the author by her mother: pictures, letters, postcards, scrapbooks, diaries, newspapers, magazines, yearbooks, and war souvenirs. Additional research included interviews with some folks of the "greatest generation" and ideas and stories passed down by their children.
