From the bestselling and Booker Prize winning author of Never Let Me Go and The Remains of the Day, a stunning new novel - his first since winning the Nobel Prize in Literature - that asks, what does it mean to love? This is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behaviour of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass in the street outside. She remains hopeful a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change for ever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans. A thrilling feat of world-building, a novel of exquisite tenderness and impeccable restraint, Klara and the Sun is a magnificent achievement, and an international literary event.

Comes with a unique branded bookmark specially for this book! Long listed for the 2021 Booker Prize. "Klara and the Sun" is set in a dystopian near-future. The main divide is still between the wealthy and the poor, though there are hints that society has become more fragmented. There have been clear scientific advances, however. Many - well, those who can afford it - arrange to have their children genetically engineered, in order to boost their academic chances. (This process is known as lifting, though it's not without its risks). Homeschooling is now the norm, with classes being delivered online. This obviously restricts a child's social development. Occasional parties - for want of a better word - are organised, to allow groups of children an opportunity to practise. Some wealthy families also buy their children an AF - an Artificial Friend, basically an android teenager. Klara, the book's narrator, is an Artificial Friend. Clever, likeable, observant and innocent, she's still in a shop as the book opens - waiting for a family to choose her. She develops explanations for what she sees around her and through the shop window - though, with only a limited life experience, she doesn't always get it quite right. Being solar powered, she has a faith in the sun that borders on religious. We pack our books properly and ship daily from the UK. Nº de ref. del artículo: ABE-1749912777567
