Inspired by Seamus Heaney's poems, and notably by his version of the medieval Irish saga "Buile Suibhne", the American photographer Rachel Giese has produced a stunning portfolio of pictures of the northern Irish landscape, covering the boundaries of Mad Sweeney's original kingdom of Dal-Arie. She has followed the clues to topography and the natural world in Sweeney's wanderings, and gathered together 34 photographs which Seamus Heaney has matched with extracts and quotations from his "Sweeney Astray".

Seamus Heaney was born in 1939 in County Derry in Northern Ireland. He grew up in the country, on a farm, in touch with a traditional rural way of life, which he wrote about in his first book Death of a Naturalist (1966). He attended the local school and in 1951 went as a boarder to St Columb's College, about 40 miles away in Derry (the poem 'Singing School' in North refers to this period of his life). In 1956 he went on a scholarship to Queen's University, Belfast and graduated with a first class degree in English Language and Literature in 1961. After a year as a post-graduate at a college of education, and a year teaching in a secondary modern school in Ballymurphy, he was appointed to the staff of St Joseph's College of Education. In 1966 Seamus Heaney took up a lecturing post in the English Department of Queen's University, and remained there until 1972, spending the academic year 1970-71 as a visiting Professor at the University of California in Berkeley.

"Inspired by Seamus Heaney's poems, and notably by his version of the medieval Irish saga Buile Suibhne, the American photographer Rachel Giese has produced a stunning portfolio of pictures of the northern Irish landscape, covering the boundaries of Mad Sweeney's original kingdom of Dal-Arie. She has resourcefully followed the clues to topography and the natural world in Sweeney's wanderings, and gathered together 34 exceptional photographs which Seamus Heaney has matched with extracts and quotations from his Sweeney Astray. He has revised many of his stanzas for inclusion in Sweeney's Flight, and as an entity the book represents a fruitful and imaginative collaboration between poet and photographer which is of great interest and beauty. The whole of the revised text of Sweeney Astray is printed in the second part of the book." "Mr Heaney has written a preface to this joint work in which he reflects on the relation of images and words, and his impetus to 'snip lyric leaves off the old narrative boughs'. Sweeney's Flight has been finely printed in duotone to the same high quality as Ms Giese's previous collection of photographs, The Donegal Pictures" -- Dust jacket.
