Preface Several years ago at the instance of the then editor of the Atlantic Monthly I undertook to show that Language and Literature presented a field for scientific study much like that of Economics or Ethics, inasmuch as the phenomena which they furnished were neither accidental nor capricious, but the result of the operation of certain fundamental laws as definite and formulable in the one case as in the other provided one took the trouble to investigate the phenomena in a scientific spirit. For the development of a means of thinking and the selection of a body of thought to be made more or less permanent and general are acts of the human mind to be studied in the light of antecedent causes, and not mere subjects of interesting speculation and dilettante criticism.
