The writer lias tried to avoid in this little book a too highly-colored picture of hospital life. He has rather aimed to present a sketch which should have the merit of simplicity and accuracy even in its minor details, with a full sense of his obligations to the cause of historical truth. The manuscript was not written, in the first instance, for publication, but to preserve, for the writers own satisfaction, a record of a valuable personal experience. As it grew under his hand, old memories were quickened, old companionships seemed to be renewed, former scenes were revived, and the splendid examples of heroism which were daily and hourly witnessed, kindled an impulse which has resulted in this work. Yielding to the judgment of his friends, he submits it to the public, asking for it a kindly reception. W. H. E.
