The postman turned in at the rectory gate and blew his whistle. This was his afternoon round; he was tired, and his legs ached. The thought crossed his mind that some folks were lucky. Imagine living in a beautiful big gray-stone house, with ample lawns and salvia-bordered walks, and just loafing around all day. Nothing to do but preach a twenty-minute sermon each Simday and go to church two or three times a week. And the church right next door, at that! An ample and comfortable-looking black-clad maid responded to the whistle of the envious postman. Not even here was there balm in Gilead, for the maid was neither young nor pretty, and she and the postman had known each other for years. Not much to-day, said the man, producing a solitary missive. How syour cold? asked the maid, as a matter of politeness. Oh, Im draggin around. Us poor folks has to. Think Id like a preachers job for awhile. A bout one day youd like it, if that. Much you know about such jobs, said the maid scathingly, and shut the door in his face.
