"Its comprehensive nature provides students with a wealth of information and skills to ease their transition into independence and higher education. The text provides solid information on how to deal with most students' common transition issues, such as dealing with relationships and other emotional issues that face a new college student."
Authored by John Santrock, a prominent developmental psychologist, and Jane Halonen, an educational leader in critical thinking, this concise text and CD-ROM combine together to appeal to instructors who want to emphasize student self-awareness in the pursuit of college success goals, as well as active learning strategies. Within the 10-chapter text, the author's have developed six themes that impact students' success. They have developed an innovative visual map: the "Six-Point Model of Success." Santrock and Halonen introduce these themes in Chapter 1 and then integrate them throughout the book. The themes are: 1. Develop Meaningful Values; 2. Set Goals, Plan, and Monitor; 3. Get Motivated and Take Responsibility; 4. Think and Learn; 5. Build Self-Esteem and Confidence; and 6. Explore Careers. Each subsequent chapter integrates the themes in the chapter's content. At the end of each chapter, a Learning Portfolio includes: self-assessments, journal activities, and the "Point to Success" goal-setting exercise. This valuable Learning Portfolio will help students record their reflections and track their success through the course. Each chapter also contains a carefully chosen self-assessment that helps the student identify areas they need to focus their skills. An accompanying CD-ROM is packaged free with every new text and is a valuable addition to the learning resources this book offers. The CD-ROM contains electronic versions of the self-assessments from the book (and some are additional!), My Journal activities, Point to Success exercises, case studies for in-class or journal discussion, and additional material on the use of computers.
