9780521001557: Silence and Voice in the Study of Contentious Politics (Cambridge Studies in Contentious Politics)

The aim of the book is to highlight and begin to give "voice" to some of the notable "silences" evident in recent years in the study of contentious politics. The coauthors hope to redress the present topical imbalance in the field. In particular, the authors take up seven specific topics in the volume: the relationship between emotions and contention; temporality in the study of contention; the spatial dimensions of contention; leadership in contention; the role of threat in contention; religion and contention; and contention in the context of demographic and life-course processes.

About the Author:

Jack A. Goldstone is Professor of Sociology and International Relations at the University of California, Davis. He is the author of the prize-winning REVOLUTION AND REBELLION IN THE EARLY MODERN WORLD (California 1981), and editor of THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF POLITICAL REVOLUTIONS (Congressional Quarterly 1998), and REVOLUTIONS OF THE LATE TWENTIETH CENTURY (Westview 1991). He has been a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, and held Fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University, and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. He is working on a monograph--REVOLUTIONS, SOCIAL MOVEMENTS, AND SOCIAL CHANGE--forthcoming from Harvard University Press.

Doug McAdam is Professor of Sociology at Stanford University and the former Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS). He is the author or co-author of 13 books and some 75 articles in the area of political sociology, with a special emphasis on the study of social movements and revolutions. Among his best known works are Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency, 1930 1970, a new edition of which was published in 1999; Freedom Summer (1988), which was awarded the 1990 C. Wright Mills Award as well as being a finalist for the American Sociological Association's best book prize for 1991; and Dynamics of Contention (2001) with Sid Tarrow and Charles Tilly. He is also the author of the forthcoming book, A Theory of Fields (with Neil Fligstein). He is a two-time former Fellow of CASBS, a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2003).

Elizabeth J. Perry is Henry Rosovsky Professor of Government at Harvard University and Director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute.

Sidney Tarrow is Maxwell M. Upson Professor of Government and Professor of Sociology at Cornell University. Tarrow's first book was Peasant Communism in Southern Italy (Yale, 1967). In the 1980s, after a brief foray into comparative local politics, he returned to social movements with a collaborative volume with B. Klandermans and H. Kriesi, Between Structure and Action (JAI, 1988); then to a reconstruction of Italian protest cycle of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Democracy and Disorder (Oxford, 1989). His most recent books are Power in Movement (Cambridge, 1994, 1998) (with Doug McAdam and Charles Tilly), Dynamics of Contention (Cambridge, 2001) (with Doug Imig), Contentious Europeans (Rowman and Littlefield, 2001) and (with Donatella della Porta) Transnational Protest and Global Activism (Rowman and Littlefield, 2004). A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he is currently Vice-President of the APSA Section on Comparative Politics.

Review:

"This excellent book is indispensable for those who think there is nothing new in the study of social movements." Journal of Interdisciplary History

Descripción CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2001. Paperback. Estado de conservación: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. The aim of this book is to highlight and begin to give voice to some of the notable silences evident in recent years in the study of contentious politics. The seven co-authors take up seven specific topics in the volume: the relationship between emotions and contention; temporality in the study of contention; the spatial dimensions of contention; leadership in contention; the role of threat in contention; religion and contention; and contention in the context of demographic and life-course processes. The seven spent three years involved in an ongoing project designed to take stock, and attempt a partial synthesis, of various literatures that have grown up around the study of non-routine or contentious politics. As such, it is likely to be viewed as a groundbreaking volume that not only undermines conventional disciplinary understanding of contentious politics, but also lays out a number of provocative new research agendas.
