The long campaign of the Italian city-states to deny the political and moral legitimacy of their exiles left a vivid record in contemporary documents, chronicles, and histories. Outcasts voiced their many grievances or searched for consolation in an intensely poignant literature. Drawing on a wide range of sources, this book traces the hitherto unwritten history of a "contrary commonwealth" of exile from its open and collective resistance during the Middle Ages to its submission to Renaissance regimes that were forerunners of the modern state. Randolph Starn is Professor of History at the university of California, Berkeley.
