The dimensions of space and time defy the human imagination: they inevitably undermine traditional beliefs, while giving rise to the sort of substitute faiths that caused catastrophic wars in the 20th century and are now behind attempts to create a new, artificial world of entertainment, games, and virtual reality. This is a discussion of the changes in thinking and behaviour at the turn of the millennium. Czech writer Ivan Klima considers the main values in human society that must be preserved and tries to identify the people in today's world who are seeking to transform generally accepted consumer values into genuine values based on mutual human relations, moderation, and an understanding of the place of humans in nature.

paperback. Condición: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. DESCRIPTION - As we come to the end of a century of political turbulence and stand at the threshold of the next, who better than Ivan Klima to raise and respond to the key questions about our future? As a child, he survived three years in a Fascist concentration camp, only then to undergo nearly twenty years of censorship under another totalitarian regime - this time Communist. Klima was virtually forbidden to follow his chosen profession as writer, and prohibited from publishing. Ample experience indeed of the darker aspects of our recent history. Perhaps surprisingly, given these beginnings, the voice that emerges is a profoundly humane one. Twenty succinct and thought-provoking chapters deal with topics of essential interest to us all today, including the role of rationality and irrationality, apathy and aggressiveness, the abdication of art, the mass media, virtual reality and escapism, youth's own particular vision, and a dozen or so other equally vital issues. Ivan Klima was born in 1931 in Prague. He spent over three years in a Nazi concentration camp as a child. From 1970 he was blacklisted by the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, and could only publish abroad. He was deeply involved in the Velvet Revolution of 1989 with other dissident writers such as Vaclav Havel. His books and plays have been translated into 30 languages, and among his latest English translations are THE SPIRIT OF PRAGUE, a collection of essays, and the novel THE ULTIMATE INTIMACY. As a visiting professor, he has lectured at the University of Michigan (1969-70), and the University of California, Berkeley (1997). inventory #15426. Nº de ref. del artículo: z15426
