Although best known for his paintings, Poussin's use of pen and luminous wash, and his strong sense of pattern, resulted in some of the most exciting and beautiful drawings of the High Baroque. This book is a catalogue of the drawings by Poussin and his circle in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle one of the world's most important holdings of drawings by Poussin, with a provenance that goes back to the collections of the artist's friends and patrons. It accompanies a traveling exhibition of sixty-five Poussin drawings that will be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, as part of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of Poussin's birth. Poussin's drawings are concerned mostly with the development of complex compositions, rather than with exploring individual poses or particular motifs. They often show signs of his use of wax models on a small stage; the manikins were moved about in a kind of puppet theatre with variable lighting and backdrops. Few drawings are of individual figures, and no drawings from the nude were known until the discovery of two that are published and discussed here for the first time. Martin Clayton, Assistant Curator at Windsor Castle, contributes a full discussion of the drawings, reflecting the latest developments in Poussin studies and including the findings of recent conservation work in the Royal Library. / Contents -- Acknowledgements -- Foreword -- Author's note -- Introduction s -- CATALOGUE -- SECTION ONE: Paris -- : The Marino drawings -- Catalogue nos. -- SECTION TWO: Rome -- Catalogue nos-- SECTION THREE: Paris -- , and the late years in Rome -- Catalogue nos. -- APPENDIX A -- Drawings attributed to Poussin not in the exhibition -- Drawings by Poussin's Studio in Paris -- Copies after Poussin -- Drawings not by Poussin or his Studio -- APPENDIX B -- Watermarks -- APPENDIX C -- Concordances -- Bibliography.
