Excerpt from Library of Universal History and Popular Science, Vol. 5 of 25: Containing a Record of the Human Race From the Earliest Historical Period to the Present Time; Embracing a General Survey of the Progress of Mankind in National and Social Life, Civil Government, Religion, Literature, Science and Art; Medieval History
The evidence of language shows us that the Celts migrated first and established themselves in Central Europe; but after a time they were pressed into Western Europe by the Teutons, whereupon they settled in Spain, Gaul and the British Isles. The Teutons thus occupied Cen tral and Eastern Europe. The Latin and Hellenic nations occupied respectively the two great peninsulas of Southern Europe - Italy and Greece. The Slavonians - the last of the Aryan nations to enter Eu rope - overspread the vast steppes of Eastern Europe.
