When Sixtus IV., the first pontifi' of the race of the Revere, built the chapel which bears his name, he entrusted its adornment to the best men that he could then find in Italy. The decision with which he set to work is shown in the rapidity with which his commands were obeyed. The frescos of the Sixtine chapel were all completed in the short period Of twelve months and on the 15th Of August, 1483, Julius, the second Pope of his race, chaunted, as cardinal, a mass in the chapel.
