Excerpt from Anthrax: With Special Reference to the Production of Immunity
Anthrax is one Of the Oldest diseases. Moses records it in Exodus Homer, Ovid, Plutarch, Virgil, Pliny, and many others have mentioned it in their writing. It exists in all countries and in all latitudes. It was formerly very destructive to human life as well as to animals. In 1617, near Naples, people are reported to have died from anthrax. In San Domingo, in 1770, persons perished in the short period of six weeks. This enormous death rate was probably due, in part, to eating the carcasses of animals dead from the disease.
