Excerpt from Letters on the Recent Railway Riots, Their Causes and Results, and the Political Position of the "Young Ireland" Brigade, Vol. 1
The consequences of this plain speaking I have duly weighed and measured. In a long public life. And in unrestrained social intercourse with thousands of human beings, no man ever heard me revile anybody's religion. I respect the feelings and admire the sincerity of the Catholic whose opinions I do not share, whose ceremonies I may think superfluous. But, when he comes to prepagate his religion by the bludgeon - when the liberty to criticise and scofl', which he claims and exercises, he attempts to deny to the Protestant population, my path is plain, and-i tread it utterly regardless of consequences.
