The object of the following pages is to supply a want which has long been felt, namely, a few general instructions for managing or conducting private or small public gas works, so as to be able to realize the best and most economical results. To works for the supply of large towns, these instructions do not, as a matter of course, apply, as they have, in general, the means of employing well-skilled engineering assistance. It is,' however, altogether different with works on a small scale, more especially those for supplying villages and small towns.
