Excerpt from The Design, Construction and Test of a Rectifier
The electric light has now become quite popular, nearly every city of a thousand inhabitants or so having its electric light plant. At the time of the greatest activity in this line it was the fad to install indiscriminately single phase apparatus producing an alternating current having a frequency of from 100 to 140 cycles per second.
One of the objections to this system was the fact that elec tric fans and small motors could not be profitably operated, for vita a transformer system connected to the mains for 24 hours, the core losses in the transformers might amount to as much as the revenue from the current sold for these small powers.
