Excerpt from Biographical Sketches

The seven sketches which form the present volume have been contributed to various Magazines and Reviews during the past twenty years. They are scarcely altered, tho ugh there are opinions and expressions which 1 might modify were I now writing for the first time on the same subjects. But since 1 here admit that my views have under gone a certain develofiment, and since the course and even the process of change will be apparent to those who care to trace them, it has seemed best to leave the papers mainly as they were written, with such few variations as were necessary to give unity to the whole.
