Sinopsis

Understanding Canada geese, habitat, and hunting effects at Rend Lake
This overview explains how food availability, land use, and seasonal hunting influence goose behavior and weights in the Rend Lake area. It highlights what researchers found about energy needs, waste grain, and the limits of habitat in supporting current goose numbers.

The study shows that geese rely on high-energy grain and waste grain in nearby fields to meet daily energy needs. It also notes how limited land area and specific land-use patterns can affect their ability to feed during hunting season, leading to weight declines and shifts in movement. Overall, the findings point to habitat improvements as the main lever for supporting larger populations.

  • How energy needs and available grain shape goose daily food intake

  • How waste grain from local crops contributes to goose diet

  • How hunting season influences goose movement and feeding time

  • What changes to land area and land use could improve habitat conditions

Ideal for readers interested in wildlife management, habitat research, and the ecology of Canada geese.

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from Resource Utilization by Canada Geese at Rend Lake: Final Project Report

Rend Lake Refuge is a ha inviolate portion of the ha Rend Lake Wildlife Management Area managed primarily for Canada geese. It differs from other southern Illinois refuges in having less agricultural land for food production (paine Refuge fields are sharecropped by area farmers, resulting in an excessive amounts of one cr0p planted in some years. Because of a large wintering goose population and relatively small area of cropland, the Refuge may contribute little to meeting energy needs of geese. Thus, privately owned agricultural fields may be important to meeting goose energy requirements. These issues suggested the need to study resource availability and use in the Rend Lake area.
